In 1968, Giorgio Griffa abandoned figurative painting in favour of an abstract language that still characterises his work today.
He works with acrylic on raw, unstretched canvas, burlap and linen. The canvases are hung directly on the wall and, when not exhibited, are folded and stacked, leaving creases that become part of the composition.
Constants in his work are the unfinished, anonymous signs and the repetition of gestures that remain similar yet never identical.

Giorgio Griffa was born in Turin in 1936 and lives and works there. His exhibition activity began in 1968.
He is regarded as one of the major protagonists of abstraction and one of the most creative figures associated with Analytical Painting. Repetition, anonymous patterns, unfinished structures and the physical presence of unstretched canvas are constants of his work.

A visit to the artist’s Turin studio, tracing gesture, rhythm and the intelligence of the unfinished canvas.
